Raiding the Medicine Cabinet for Sciatic Nerve Pain Relief

Sciatic nerve pain relief can be achieved using certain types of drugs that can easily be purchased at your local drugstore, many of which might already be in your medicine cabinet. Medications you normally use for toothache, headache, or certain body pains can also relieve the discomfort caused by the contraction of the sciatic nerve in your lower back. There are many types of medications out there that can help you relieve the pain, but never take a drug without knowing how it works.

Among the drugs that can provide sciatic nerve pain relief are NSAIDs, which stands for Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Among these are over-the-counter meds like aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil), and naproxen (Aleve). Also there’s prescription medication like COX-2 inhibitors (Celebrex). As with all drugs, there are effects and side-effects to be weighed, so it is advised to discuss this with the pharmacist or a doctor before actually popping a pill.

Analgesics, like Tylenol, also work well in providing sciatic nerve pain relief. The main difference between analgesics and NSAIDs is that analgesics treat the pain, while NSAIDs treat the pain and the inflammation causing it, either one could alleviate the pain so find out which one would work for you. Also, very few patients are allergic to analgesics, it doesn’t upset the stomach, the effect does not wean even with continuous use.

Be wary though in choosing which medications to take for Sciatica, it is always best to consider your history with certain types of medication and have a good long talk with an expert before raiding your medicine cabinet.
